Who is Ama?
Maame Ama Osei is a beautiful, fashionable, and determined young lady from Ghana, West Africa (one time for Africurrr). Although she was born and raised in Maryland, USA, she claims GH because that is where her family hails.
Ama attends the finest HBCU in America, Howard University. (As she puts it, “The Real HU!”). She’s working towards a degree in Health Sciences. In addition to hustling those killer grades, Ama is also a killer athlete. She played tennis in high school and decided to continue her amazing sports career with the Howard Women’s Varsity Tennis Team. In the future, she aspires to become a DPT in Physical Therapy. What’s more, she is a fellow foodie that loves Cinnabons and Cotton Candy!
Many recent experiences have shaped her life for the better, but the incident that really moved her took place a few weeks ago:
“I played in a tournament in North Carolina over the weekend and I noticed that my opponents behaved as if they hated me once I stepped on the court. I have never met any of the girls in my life and I wondered why these young women behaved as if I am their arch nemesis. In short, I ignored the young women in the best way possible and beat them. The moral of the story is: everyone isn’t going to like you and its usually because they see something in you cannot see in yourself. You just have to ignore the people like that and do what you need to do in order to outshine them. This particular experience has shaped me into a more well-rounded person and has drawn me closer to God so that His light can shine upon my life. In addition, when you have Jesus you should not care what others think of you or how they perceive you, but before you act please take a moment to think “what would Jesus do?”… You will save yourself many headaches, trust me…”
What impact do you want to leave on the world?
“I want people to remember me for always being straightforward and a leader. When you tell it like it is and you take charge of your life, and circumstances people will see that, and eventually you will gain respect. Try to always remember that somebody is watching you or looking up to you so you have to set a prime example for the younger generation to follow… I have two younger sisters and I try to show them that when you work hard, set goals, and aim to be the BEST you CAN accomplish anything by God’s grace.”
When asked if there are any quotes she lives by, Ama says there are two prevalent verses in her life: Proverbs 12:16 – “Fools show their annoyance at once but the prudent overlook their insult,” and Proverbs 16:3 – “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.”
